Toler Hall (formerly Phelan Hall), the oldest residence hall at the University of San Francisco, recently went through an overhaul of some much-needed building renovations. The University’s focus was the dormitory bathrooms. The students joked around but truly dreaded using the dated facilities at Toler Hall, due to the cleanliness and overall grimy conditions. It was time, for an update.
All the bathroom walls were priority one for Oculus Architects, as they scoped out the project, including the showers, dressing rooms, lavatories, etc. They had originally planned to use a variety of materials for the different wall applications and 100% acrylic solid surface specifically for the shower walls. They investigated other material options for the lavatory and dressing rooms, but could not find a material that fit their needs, until they were introduced to Avonite Surfaces® Wet Wall Panels. Instantly, their problems were solved.
Avonite Surfaces® 100% Acrylic Wet Wall panels are a hygienic, nonporous solid surface that can be installed faster and cleaned easier than tile. With Avonite Surfaces® Sheets, there is no grout sealing and maintenance or waterproof membrane required. The architects were very pleased with these inherent features, but were most impressed by their Right Size®, or custom sizing, program.
The Right Size program, unlike any other program, allows solid surface sheets to be produced with widths up to 60 inches, lengths up to 204 inches and thickness from ¼ in. up to ¾ in. thick. Typical solid surface manufacturers can only offer standard dimensions that are no wider than 30 inches and no longer than 144 inches.
With Avonite Surfaces® Right Size®, Turner Construction ordered sheet sizes specifically to fit their needs (60 ft. x 108 ft. x 6mm.) in a clean neutral with a little character, Cordoba 9234. This was a custom color request, and was produced specifically for the University’s needs for this project. The schedule was tight, to complete the renovations before classes started would require 32,000 sq. ft. of Wet Wall panels, in 3 and a half weeks. AMAZING! This deadline would certainly not have been reached without the flexibility and installation time savings, that the Right Size® Program provided.
These tailor-made sheet sizes allowed fabrication times to be cut in half, produce significant material/project savings and reduce the amount of product waste. Avonite Surfaces® Right Size® Program was the perfect size and most importantly the right choice for Toler Hall, and the University’s appreciative students.
